1921 One Dollar Coin

Silver dollar's minted in 1921, commonly referred to as the Morgan Dollar, are valued at approximately $20 in circulated condition. In uncirculated condition their value can more than double. As with any coin, the overall condition will determine its final value. In 1921, the U.S. Mint began making Silver Dollars again after a quiet period of seventeen years with none being made. Along with the regular strikes made for circulation, the Mint struck Proofs on the orders of Farran Zerbe and Henry Chapman. The Zerbe 'Proofs' are more prooflike in comparison to the true Proofs of 1904 and earlier. Commentary: In 1921, the Mint redesigned the Morgan dollar. The new coin was in shallow relief with many features less well defined than on earlier (1878-1904) issues. Comparison of a 1921Morgan dollar (from any of the three mints) with an issue from the early 1900s will show many differences. United States of America - Morgan one dollar coin dated 1921. In 1921, The United States Mint struck two types of silver dollars – the Morgan silver dollar (also referred to as the Liberty Head silver dollar) and the Peace dollar. Peace silver dollars were designed by an Italian-American sculptor named Anthony de Francisci. He enlisted his wife, Teresa Cafarelli de Francisci, to serve as the model for the head of Miss Liberty, who is seen on the obverse of the Peace dollar with wind-blown hair and a crown, a depiction that very much resembles the head on the Statue of Liberty.

The first Peace dollars were struck with a high-relief design, though the excessive pressure required to bring up the details on the high-relief Peace dollar ended up damaging the coin’s dies very quickly. This problem would be resolved in 1922 with a lower-relief version of the Peace dollar, which would be struck until the end of the coin series in 1935.

In all, only 1,006,473 Peace dollars were struck in 1921, some of which were struck in a matte proof version. 1921 Peace dollars are quite popular with coin collectors as a first-year type coin, and thus are in high demand in all grades. Values range from around $125 for VF-20 1921 Peace dollar up to $300 for one grading MS-60. In the upper circulated grades, values can reach into the thousands. Proof 1921 Peace dollars command a hefty $50,000-plus.

Additional Info: The Minting of Morgans started up again in 1921. Not since 1904 had these coins been minted. Due to the Pittman Act, passed in 1918, many of the 1921 Morgans are actually older Morgans and peace dollars melted down and re-coined. 1921 Peace Dollars generally have nice reeded edges as they are newer.

Numismatic vs Intrinsic Value:This coin in poor condition is still worth $6.95 more than the intrinsic value from silver content of $21.05, this coin is thus more valuable to a collector than to a silver bug. Coins worth more to a collectors may be a better long term investment. If the metal prices drop you will still have a coin that a numismatic would want to buy.
